Understanding Alopecia

Hair loss is a common problem that affects millions of men, women, and children. For some people hair loss is temporary but for countless others hair loss is a persistent problem that seems to have no end. While people experience hair loss for a variety of reasons, the most common cause of hair loss is Alopecia. While Alopecia describes loss of hair from areas where hair normally grows. It comes in a variety of patterns with a variety of causes.

Alopecia Areata (AA)
Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system of the body targets the hair follicles and disturbs the natural hair growth and formation. With Alopecia Areata, hair falls out leaving small smooth bald patches on the scalp.

Alopecia Totalis (AT)
Alopecia Totallis is an autoimmune disorder that results in the total loss of hair, but only on the scalp. Just like with AA, this condition occurs when the immune system starts attacking the hair follicles.

Alopecia Universalis (AU)
Alopecia Universalis is an autoimmune disorder and the most advanced type of Alopecia. This condition results in the total hair loss all over the body, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and nasal cavity. It’s especially important for those with this condition to take extra care to protect themselves from the sun, bacteria and other potentially harmful elements.

Alopecia Barbae
Alopecia barbae is a form of Alopecia Areata that is localized to the beard area. It can be a single bald patch or more extensive hair loss across the whole of the beard area. While the exact cause of this condition is still unknown, studies indicate that heredity and autoimmune diseases might play a factor.

Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA)
Androgenetic Alopecia, more commonly known as Male & Female Pattern Baldness, is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. For men who experience male pattern baldness their hairline recedes causing an “M” shape to form. Their hair also thins near the top of their head causing partial or complete baldness. For women who experience female pattern baldness their hair becomes thinner all over the head, but the hairline does not recede. Women who experience Androgenetic Alopecia rarely go completely bald. Researchers have found that a variety of genetic and environmental factors likely play a role in causing Androgenetic Alopecia.

Scarring Alopecias (Cicatricial Alopecias)
The term "Cicatricial Alopecias" refers to a diverse group of rare disorders that destroy the hair follicle, replace it with scar tissue, and cause permanent hair loss. While the cause of this condition is not well understood, what is known, is that redness, heat, pain, or swelling occurs at the upper part of the hair follicle.

Traction Alopecia
Traction Alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs over time and is caused by putting the hair under constant strain or tension. The constant tension in the affected area either pulls out the hairs' roots completely, or causes the follicles to become inflamed. Over time the damage to the follicles can cause them to waste away or stop producing hair all together. This condition is most commonly found in people with ponytails or cornrows who pull on their hair with excessive force.
