Alopecia Declassified

According to Medicaldictionary.com Alopecia, is commonly defined as hair loss, or baldness. There is no one cause for hair loss; sometimes it is hereditary, or it can be from the toxins in chemotherapy or your daily prescription medicine. Medical dictionary says the scalp can be visibly diseased and one could be diagnosed with alopecia just by looking.

The British Associate of Dermatologist provides a list of the different types of alopecia with the explanation and abbreviations:

· Alopecia Areata AA is a autoimmune condition, which produces patches.

· Alopecia Totalis AT is an aggressive AA that causes complete hair loss.

· Alopecia Universalis AU is severe causing total hair loss on the entire body.

· Alopecia Barbae is AA that causes patches on the beard area.

· Androgenetic Alopecia AGA is a hereditary gradual hair loss in men and women causing pattern baldness.

· Scarring Alopecia and Cicatricial Alopecia are rare disorders causing indefinite hair loss.

· Traction Alopecia is caused when hair is always pulled adding tension on the hair stopping new hair follicles from growing.

· Anagen Effluvium is due to the harsh toxins used to treat cancer, which cause patches or hair loss, according to Alopeciaonline.org, it typically takes six months for the hair to grow back.

· Telogen Effluvium is the temporary condition that causes average amounts of hair to fall out.

Upcoming Alopecia Awareness Month

September is Alopecia Awareness Month and teams from the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) have gathered all over the nation to help bring awareness to this common condition.
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and sometimes other areas of the body. T-cells attack the hair follicles, hiding them from immune recognition. It generally starts with hair on the scalp falling out in patches, creating smooth round bald spots which can eventually progress to total scalp hair loss (Alopecia Totalis) or complete body hair loss (Alopecia Universalis).
The disease can affect anyone at any age but symptoms often begin during childhood. The cause of Alopecia Areata is still unknown and doctors do not know what activates the autoimmune reaction. Research suggests it could be a combination of genetic susceptibility or environmental triggers that may confuse the immune system.
This year, the National Alopecia Areata Foundation has a new awareness and fundraising campaign called SeeUs. According to NAAF, the SeeUs Campaign is “our approach to reducing the stigma of difference and celebrating the uniqueness and resiliency of people living with these conditions.” People dealing with hair loss are encouraged to share their stories with friends and family or even on a larger scale, like in your community to help bring awareness and inform people about Alopecia Areata.
As in years past, the major and minor league baseball organizations show their support for NAAF as they “Team Up For Alopecia Areata”.  Sixteen teams (so far!) including the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, and NAAF’s hometown heroes, the three-time champion San Francisco Giants have scheduled events and many will be hosting a variety of activities including awareness booths, public service announcements, first pitches, and more. Check out NAAF.org to find out the dates and times for the events.
At IHRS we fully support Alopecia Awareness Month and are here to help anyone suffering with alopecia. At our office, we are committed to restoring your hair and your life. We want you to feel confident. We pride ourselves on giving each client individualized treatment plans based on the type and cause of their hair loss as well as the outcome that they hope to have.
We offer a variety of treatments that are surgical and non-surgical such as Sensigraft hair replacement, Laser Hair Therapy, NeoGraft hair transplantation, luxury wigs and hair extensions, among many other options. Understanding Alopecia

Hair loss is a common problem that affects millions of men, women, and children. For some people hair loss is temporary but for countless others hair loss is a persistent problem that seems to have no end. While people experience hair loss for a variety of reasons, the most common cause of hair loss is Alopecia. While Alopecia describes loss of hair from areas where hair normally grows. It comes in a variety of patterns with a variety of causes.

Alopecia Areata (AA)
Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system of the body targets the hair follicles and disturbs the natural hair growth and formation. With Alopecia Areata, hair falls out leaving small smooth bald patches on the scalp.

Alopecia Totalis (AT)
Alopecia Totallis is an autoimmune disorder that results in the total loss of hair, but only on the scalp. Just like with AA, this condition occurs when the immune system starts attacking the hair follicles.

Alopecia Universalis (AU)
Alopecia Universalis is an autoimmune disorder and the most advanced type of Alopecia. This condition results in the total hair loss all over the body, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and nasal cavity. It’s especially important for those with this condition to take extra care to protect themselves from the sun, bacteria and other potentially harmful elements.

Alopecia Barbae
Alopecia barbae is a form of Alopecia Areata that is localized to the beard area. It can be a single bald patch or more extensive hair loss across the whole of the beard area. While the exact cause of this condition is still unknown, studies indicate that heredity and autoimmune diseases might play a factor.

Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA)
Androgenetic Alopecia, more commonly known as Male & Female Pattern Baldness, is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. For men who experience male pattern baldness their hairline recedes causing an “M” shape to form. Their hair also thins near the top of their head causing partial or complete baldness. For women who experience female pattern baldness their hair becomes thinner all over the head, but the hairline does not recede. Women who experience Androgenetic Alopecia rarely go completely bald. Researchers have found that a variety of genetic and environmental factors likely play a role in causing Androgenetic Alopecia.

Scarring Alopecias (Cicatricial Alopecias)
The term "Cicatricial Alopecias" refers to a diverse group of rare disorders that destroy the hair follicle, replace it with scar tissue, and cause permanent hair loss. While the cause of this condition is not well understood, what is known, is that redness, heat, pain, or swelling occurs at the upper part of the hair follicle.

Traction Alopecia
Traction Alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs over time and is caused by putting the hair under constant strain or tension. The constant tension in the affected area either pulls out the hairs' roots completely, or causes the follicles to become inflamed. Over time the damage to the follicles can cause them to waste away or stop producing hair all together. This condition is most commonly found in people with ponytails or cornrows who pull on their hair with excessive force.

If you’re ready to fight back against Alopecia then IHRS is here to help. At IHRS, we can help determine the root of your problem and provide hair restoration solutions that are designed specifically to meet the individual and unique needs of each of our clients. IHRS – Testimonials

Nothing says exceptional customer service like great reviews and testimonials from actual clients, so we've decided to share some much appreciated reviews from real clients of IHRS. Keep reading to see how IHRS has helped these clients and can help you in your journey to hair restoration too!

Dear IHRS,
“Thank you, thank you for all your help with my five-year-old son Brian. I cannot believe the difference in his behavior at school since he got his hair replacement. This has made such an improvement in his self-esteem.

I must admit I was hesitant about my search for a solution to his hair loss which was caused by his accident. I was fearful that I would not be able to find a suitable solution to Brian's baldness at such a young age.

As you know, children are cruel. I did not want to risk Brian being in a situation where his hair replacement would come off, especially on the playground.  Also, I could not imagine how anyone could match up the fine texture of his hair.

You had the answers to all my questions and erased any doubts I had about hair replacement systems. You furnished us with a wonderful natural-looking, low-maintenance, secure, and incredibly handsome system.

Again, thank you. I hope that we have given you something back by letting you know how genuinely happy you have made us.”- Kathy S.
(Brian's Mother)

Dear IHRS,
“My scalp would get sun burned easily. Once my friend took a picture of me and I could not believe how thin my hair had gotten. I knew I had to do something about it.
With ReAllusions I can wear any style, any way I want to: long, short, and color too.”
-  Julie, Age 38

Dear IHRS,
“I remember waking up one morning, looking in the mirror and realizing that my hair was never going to grow back. As a stylist, I wouldn't settle for anything that might look unnatural. That's why I was picky!

Thank goodness I took my time and found you. My life has definitely changed for the better. I can relax on the weekend, enjoy my photography and not worry about people bringing up my hair loss. I would recommend this to anybody with a hair loss problem!” - Paul C., Age 24

Watch Shawn's testimonial below!

We hope that these testimonials showed you that other people have gone through the same devastating effects of hair loss as you but they found the help and support they needed. You’re not alone because IHRS is here for you!

NeoGraft™ Hair Transplantation at IHRS

International Hair Restoration Systems is proud to offer Surgical Hair Restoration as a permanent solution for men with thinning hair. With more than 30 years of experience, IHRS has the best professionals in the field to perform Surgical Hair Transplantation.

At IHRS our approach to hair transplantation for each client is different. We begin by offering a FREE evaluation to accurately determine if you are eligible to undergo the procedure and/or if surgical hair transplantation is the best route for optimum results. Once our hair loss expert determines that you are a candidate for hair transplantation, we customize the procedure based on your age, hair type, health, the degree of hair loss and overall expectations.

During the transplant procedure, the doctor removes hair from the "donor area" of the patient’s head and transplants them into the area of the scalp with loss. The "donor area" consists of hairs genetically pre-determined not to fall out, making them the ideal candidates for transplantation! IHRS's NeoGraft™ Procedure can move four to six times as much hair as the standard approach, using follicular unit grafts throughout, producing a completely natural result. Learn more by visiting Hair4Me.com.

Take the first step by scheduling your FREE hair and scalp analysis to find out if you're a candidate for Surgical Hair Transplantation or one of our other professional hair restoration options! Hair4Me.com

Men’s Hair Loss

Over 50 million men suffer from the devastating effects of hair loss in the U.S. alone. While factors such as stress, medications, poor diet, and even lack of sleep can cause men to lose their hair, the largest influence is genetics.

Androgenetic Alopecia, more commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness is usually caused by increased sensitivity to male sex hormones in certain parts of the scalp and is passed from one family member to the next. This means you inherited hair follicles that suffer from dihydrotestosterone or DHT for short, these hair follicles shrink until the follicles stop producing hair.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, male pattern baldness is responsible for approximately 95% of men’s hair loss. About 25% of men who suffer from male pattern baldness will start to experience hair loss before they reach the age of 21. Nearly two-thirds of American men will experience some form of visible hair loss by the age of 35 and by the age of 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. See the diagram below.

Image

Male pattern baldness is identified by the pattern of hair loss. The typical pattern of male baldness begins at the hairline, and gradually recedes until forming an "M" shape. Eventually the hair becomes finer, shorter, and thinner, creating a u-shaped ring of hair that wraps around the back of the head.

While male pattern baldness is usually diagnosed based on appearance, your hair loss could be caused by many other reasons. At International Hair Restoration Systems in Jacksonville, we want to make sure you're getting the expert advice and answers to your particular questions and concerns. Hot Weather Hairstyles

As the weather heats up we’re all searching for ways to keep cool while we spend more time outside. One of the easiest ways to help us stay cool is by switching up our hairstyles. Here are a few styles to help you beat the heat this spring and summer.
Image

THE FIVE STRAND BRAID

If you’re rushing around the house trying to get ready and still don’t know what to do with your hair, the five-strand side braid is a hairstyle that looks great, doesn't require much effort, and will keep the hair off your neck.

SUMMERTIME HAIR WRAP

Whether you’re doing chores or just spending the day in your garden, this hairstyle works perfectly since it keeps you hair up and out of your face. This simple style secures your hair using a wrap or scarf while adding a bit more flair to your hair.
Image

TRIPLE BRAIDED CINNAMON BUN

Along with ponytails, braids and wraps, another simple style to help keep you cool is the bun. Buns are an effective and trendy way to keep those pesky hairs off your face and neck. Instead of just one bun, make it three for fun summer locks!

FRENCH BRAIDED PONYTAIL

The ponytail is a people’s choice favorite when it comes to hot weather hairstyles, but if you’re looking for a unique way to change up your ponytail try adding a French braid. Braiding your hair will help pull loose strands away from your face allowing for more comfort and a flirty style.

Do you have a signature summer hair style to keep cool? Share below!

It is natural to lose or shed hair on a daily basis throughout your lifetime. However, it is more alarming when the amount lost becomes larger than normal or even comes out in apparent chunks. There is a term for such a loss: Alopecia.

What is Alopecia?

According to the American Hair Loss Association, Alopecia is the medical term for excessive or abnormal hair loss.  There are varieties of forms of Alopecia. The following are considered to be autoimmune disorders. The loss of a person’s hair happens because the person’s immune system mistakenly attacks their body, or rather, their hair follicles.

Alopecia Areata: Alopecia Areata is a condition that occurs in patches anywhere on the body.

Alopecia Totalis: Alopecia Totalis results in the total of hair on the scalp. This can be at the scalp only. It can be considered an intermediary between Areata and Universalis.

Alopecia Universalis: Alopecia Universalis is the more severe more of Alopecia Areata. This condition is characterized by the complet loss of hair on the scalp AND body. It is also considered to occur in some genetically predisposed people.

Foods That May Help Keep Your Hair Healthy

Eating healthy foods is not only beneficial for your body, mind, heart and overall health, it's also necessary to keep your locks long and strong. Try adding these tasty power foods into your daily diet for extra nutrition for your hair.

1. Oysters:
A lack of zinc in your diet may lead to hair loss. Oysters have an abundance of zinc. Eating oysters can easily reach the necessary amount of zinc you should have per day in small servings. Other foods that you can eat to fill the zinc quota are nuts and eggs.

2. Spinach:
Everyone knows what happens to the cartoon character Popeye when he eats spinach. He gets big and strong and can take on anything. Well, eating spinach may also have positive effects on your hair. Spinach contains nutrients such as Iron and Vitamin C that your hair follicles need to stay healthy. If you don’t like spinach then broccoli is another healthy alternative.

3. Greek Yogurt:
Greek yogurt is another option packed with nutrition that may keep your hair healthy. Greek yogurt contains vitamins B5 and D, which are essential to quality hair follicle health. Other alternatives are cottage cheese and skim milk.

4. Poultry:
Hair is made up of nearly all protein, so what could be better to eat than chicken. Poultry contains zinc, iron, and vitamin B. If you currently have a lack of protein in your diet, adding poultry, such as chicken, can fill that void and may even keep your hair healthy. One alternative is lean beef.

5. Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes may be an excellent option for those in need of more vitamin A. A lack of vitamin A may lead to an itchy scalp and possibly dandruff. Some alternatives to sweet potatoes are apricots, mangoes, carrots, and cantaloupe.

Hair Loss and Breast Cancer

According to statistics:

·        About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

·        For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

·        Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.

We are fortunate to have many treatment options available for the complexity of the cells in each individual cancer. Be aware that these treatments do have a side-effect: hair loss.

Why does this happen?
Hair loss can occur as the result of chemotherapy which targets rapidly dividing cells – cancer and healthy. Within a few weeks, a patient may lose some if not all their hair. This also includes hair all over the body. The extent to which hair loss ensues depends on which drugs or other treatments (Radiation or Hormonal) that are used, as well as the longevity of it all. Fortunately, this is temporary and may grow back at a later date.

What can be expected?
The loss of hair often occurs one to three weeks after the start of treatment. It can happen rapidly in clumps or gradually. The accumulation of hair can be observed on your pillowcase, in a brush or comb, and even in the shower. This may continue throughout the treatment and up to a few weeks after.

How it be prevented?
It is not a full guarantee that hair loss will not occur. Nevertheless, the best thing to do is plan for the possibility. Trying to maintain a healthy mind and body after hair loss depends on a person's particular situation, such as the support of friends and family, as well as the attitude of the person.

How to make the best of it?
The best way to deal with the situation is to research what you can do to prepare yourself for possible upcoming events. Sources such as www.mayoclinic.org, ww5.komen.org/, and breastcancer.org are great sites that can assist you in the process of treatment.

If you are experiencing hair loss and in need of a solution, visit Hair4Me.com to schedule a FREE hair and scalp evaluation with one of our professional staff to determine the hair restoration treatment that's right for you.

Six Common Hair Loss Myths

There are reasons why some of the myths about hair loss have been around a long time. They appear to be true to the eye, are true in the extreme, or have been handed down for who knows how many generations. Below you will discover the follicular truth.

1.    Wearing a hat can cause hair loss.

It is not hats that cause hair loss; it’s the person wearing a hat that can possibly cause hair loss in two ways. First, wearing a hat so tight it constricts blood flow to the hair follicles might cause some shedding.

Second, wearing a hat for an extended time in hot, humid weather can lead to sebum plugs. Heat and  humidity bring sebum, the skin’s built-in lubricant, to the surface. If the sebum has time to react with  cholesterol it forms a plug that can asphyxiate hair follicles.

2.    It is normal to shed more than 100 strands of hair each day.

We each have 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles. At any given time, 85 to 90% of those are in a growth cycle that lasts five years. It is during the sixth year that a hair strand falls out, and the follicle begins another growth cycle.

It was thought that people lost around 700 strands of hair per week, but scientists did the math and that number is considered too high. It’s likely to shed 50-100 strands in one day. Losing more than that could indicate an early stage of hair loss.

3.    Cutting hair makes it grow thicker.

Each strand of hair is thicker at the scalp than at its tip. When you get a haircut, it may  appear that your hair has thickened because the split ends have been cut off. It is a  pleasant optical illusion.

4.    Daily washing and blow drying can trigger hair loss.

This is not true; however, frequent exposure to intense heat does damage hair. Heat  damaged hair is usually brittle and strands easily break off. It may look as if you are  shedding hair. Excessive heat can damage hair follicles as well, possibly causing hair loss.  Very aggressive hair pulling, tight ponytails or braids can cause traction Alopecia.

5.    You have your mother’s side of the family to thank for your hair loss.

If you are genetically wired for hair loss, it is inherited from either side of the family. You  came into the world with two copies of genetic information that determined whether  your hair will go or stay one copy from each parent.

If one of those copies is labeled “hair loss” and the other is labeled “hair for life,” the hair  loss gene will win out because hair loss is the dominant trait. Either your father or  mother could hand you the dominant hair loss gene.
