Upcoming Alopecia Awareness Month

September is Alopecia Awareness Month and teams from the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) have gathered all over the nation to help bring awareness to this common condition.

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and sometimes other areas of the body. T-cells attack the hair follicles, hiding them from immune recognition. It generally starts with hair on the scalp falling out in patches, creating smooth round bald spots which can eventually progress to total scalp hair loss (Alopecia Totalis) or complete body hair loss (Alopecia Universalis).

The disease can affect anyone at any age but symptoms often begin during childhood. The cause of Alopecia Areata is still unknown and doctors do not know what activates the autoimmune reaction. Research suggests it could be a combination of genetic susceptibility or environmental triggers that may confuse the immune system.

This year, the National Alopecia Areata Foundation has a new awareness and fundraising campaign called SeeUs. According to NAAF, the SeeUs Campaign is “our approach to reducing the stigma of difference and celebrating the uniqueness and resiliency of people living with these conditions.” People dealing with hair loss are encouraged to share their stories with friends and family or even on a larger scale, like in your community to help bring awareness and inform people about Alopecia Areata.

Sun Damage: Tips for Summer Hair Care

Summer is in full swing and this Florida heat is no joke. Keeping your hair protected all summer long is just as important as remembering to protect your skin and eyes from the sun. Many times our hair is not a concern when we are thinking about going in the sun, but it is susceptible to sun damage just like our skin. We have some tips to make sure that your hair is healthy.

Cover Up

The easiest way to avoid damage to your hair is to cover it up. There are many options like baseball caps, wide brimmed sun hats, a head scarf, or even a swim cap if you are going to be spending long amounts of time in the water. There are many protective and fashionable options for keeping your hair covered this summer. If you really do not like wearing hats or things on your head then you should ensure that you remember to sunscreen your scalp to prevent a sunburn.

Hydrate

Just like the sun sucks all the moisture out of our skin, it does the same thing to our hair.  It’s important to put the moisture back into your hair after a long day in the sun. If you walk outside into humidity with dry hair, your hair will suck in all the moisture in the air and leave your hair frizzy, so it’s a good idea to drink lots of water or apply a leave in conditioner before going out. FUT & FUE - What's The Difference?

Forty percent of men have some sort of visible hair loss by the time they reach 35 years of age. At International Hair Restoration Systems, we offer safe and effective procedures that can treat male pattern baldness such as hair transplantation. Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) -
