Money Saving Tips for Hair Maintenance

Do your research!
It is very important to do your research on products you are thinking about buying. Every dollar counts so you don’t want to be paying top dollar for low quality products or services. You should look up reviews of products and see what other people think. Peer reviews are a good way for you to get some feedback for products you may be considering purchasing.

Conserve:
When using any of your hair products it is important to conserve the amount of the product you use during one individual use. Even using a little less shampoo per hair wash could save you a good amount of money in the long run. You can also add water to your shampoo to help make it last longer. Using a lot of hairspray isn’t only bad for the environment, it’s bad for your wallet too. Using a little less of everything may also lead to healthier hair and scalp.
Cut your own bangs
No you don’t have to be a professional hair-cutter to cut your own bangs. You can save tons of money by cutting your own bangs rather than going to those expensive hair salons. I’m not saying you should give yourself a complete haircut, but if your bangs need a little trim don’t be afraid to do it yourself. On top of saving money you can save the time it takes to go to the hair salon to sit and wait for someone else to cut your bangs.

Why Going Gray Can Be a Positive

Going gray may save you money.
Think about all those times you went to the salon to get your hair colored because you didn’t want to be seen with gray hair. All the money you could have saved just by going with your natural hair color and creating your own special look. All the money you can save by not continuously coloring your hair could be used towards something more fruitful. You could possibly save up the money you would have spent to color your hair to go on a vacation.
 It’s a powerful look.
Gray hair has always had a sense of power behind it. Just look at some of the celebrities that have gray hair in real life or in movies. Anderson Cooper of CNN proudly shows off his gray hair while working and doing interviews. Anderson Cooper was even offered 1 million dollars to change his hair color, but he never changed it. Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wear’s Prada had gray hair and that may have helped her in her very believable role as a powerful fashion magazine editor.
It may keep your hair healthy.
Stopping yourself from going gray isn’t only costly in terms of money, but may actually be damaging to your hair. Putting certain types of chemicals in your hair may be bad for your hair’s long term health. Constant hair dying may lead your hair to becoming very brittle. This may lead to you having to spend even more money for other hair products.

2011 Miss America Finalist Kayla Martell’s Battle with Hair Loss.

When Kayla Martell was just a little girl at the mere age of 11 she began to lose her hair. Not just a little bit in the shower or on her pillow but clumps at a time. Kayla’s hair loss was due to a hair loss disease known as Alopecia. Alopecia occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles which results in small or large bald patches that will never grow hair like it is supposed to again.

Kayla Martell did not let hair loss bring her down. She still wanted to participate in beauty pageants like most little girls her age wanted to. Kayla had tried multiple times to wear wigs to school as a
little girl but they just kept falling off making the situation even worse. So after 9th grade she just decided to embrace the baldness by “owning it.”

At the age of 13 Kayla started participating in pageants and at the age of 14 she finally had her first win. She had competed in these pageants without wigs and still won! By the age of 17 Kayla decided that she wanted to run for Miss Delaware. This would make her the first bald contestant to ever compete along with the youngest person entering the pageant. But that didn’t faze her! She still won fourth runner up. She competed in the Miss Delaware Pageant for three more years until she was finally told that if she ever wanted to win she would have to wear a wig.

When Kayla discovered Gemtress wigs she finally realized she could be herself and have hair again.  Then in 2010 she won the Miss Delaware Pageant, which qualified her to run for Miss America in 2011. She was chosen in the Miss America Pageant as America's Choice and placed in the top 10. Today Kayla Martell travels the United States inspiring women to not let hair bring them down.

Kayla was most recently at IHRS on April 17th, 2014 to host a National Women’s Hair Loss Seminar. The event was an incredible success and Kayla met with women from around Jacksonville to discuss their options when facing this difficult time in their life. If you're interested in her story and want to learn more about how you can get help, come to IHRS.

Why do Women Lose their Hair?

Are you losing large clumps of hair in the shower?  These hair loss signs may just be your hair going through its natural stages of life. It’s common to lose hair while you’re brushing, showering, or styling your hair because once the hair dies, it falls out and a new strand is there to replace it. You’ll never notice that you even lost the hair when you look in the mirror.  However, sometimes the hair won’t grow back or may start to thin all over. This could be a much more serious condition called Androgenetic Alopecia or better known as male or female patterned baldness.

There are many reasons why a woman can lose her hair. For instance, your hair loss could be due to genetics. Genetics plays a huge role in the chemical makeup of a person. To find out if your hair loss could be genetic, it would be good to do some digging. Look at photos of your grandparents, great grandparents and even your parents. Do they show signs of balding? Talk to them as well to see if they ever experienced hair loss or hair thinning at an early age or even at all. If they did the fact of the matter is that your hair loss is probably genetic. If your hair loss is due to genetics there are several options a women can take to restore her hair. She can get a hair transplant, a hair replacement, or even extensions to make her hair full and healthy again.

A woman may also lose her hair due to hormone changes. After experiencing sudden changes in hormones it may cause the hair to fall out in clumps. Some good examples of this are pregnancy or even menopause. During pregnancy and breast feeding a woman’s hormone levels are extremely high. After the woman finishes breast feeding the hormone level may drop back down to its normal state and this may cause drastic hair loss.

Women are frequently dieting or trying to lose weight. However, if this is done in an unhealthy matter it too may cause hair loss. Going on a crash diet could make you lose weight, but it could also make you bald. Improper dieting drains the body of the nutrients and minerals it needs to produce new hair cells.

Hair loss can affect women of any age or ethnicity. It doesn’t discriminate. However, don’t let hair loss affect your life. Don’t lose confidence or get depressed. Get answers. There are many solutions available to women who suffer from any type of hair loss. Hair loss procedures can be non-surgical or surgical. It depends on the type of hair loss you’re experiencing to decide what treatment is best for you. The best way to find out how to get your hair back is to talk to a hair loss professional.

If you follow these simple steps and you’re still experiencing hair loss, it’s important to see a hair loss professional. At IHRS, we can help determine the root of your problem and provide hair restoration solutions that are designed specifically to meet the individual and unique needs of each of our clients.

Fighting Hair Loss During and After Chemotherapy

Most cancer survivors say that losing there is the worst part, but there are steps you can take to cope with your hair loss during and after chemotherapy. The first step is to accept the possibility that you may lose your hair. Hair loss due to chemotherapy may start occurring between the 7 to 14 chemotherapy treatments.

Also, chemotherapy may cause the scalp to burn and feel itchy because your hair is holding on for dear life. By applying Vitamin E to your scalp it will help ease these pains. The last thing is to invest in scarves and hats, which provide the scalp coverage from the sun, while looking stylish at the same time.

After chemotherapy has ceased and you are in the recovery stages, you’ll notice your hair starting to grow back. It may grow back in a different color or even a different texture but hey, it’s your hair! Although, hair growth may sometimes be damaged by chemotherapy treatment and hair growth may not occur after treatments has stopped. If your hair grows back in thin and patchy or not at all, there are still other options besides wigs. One could consider a hair restoration procedure, hair transplant procedure, or even medications or medicated shampoos to encourage thicker healthier hair.

While your hair is growing back it’s important to remember to be patient. Your hair isn’t going to grow back over night. It’s also important to take care of your hair while it’s growing back. Don’t apply any heat from blow-dryers, straighteners or hot curlers. Heat may damage the hair that’s trying to grow in. Try using a mild shampoo that’s easy on the hair and let your hair fall naturally without any styling products.

If you follow these simple steps and you’re still experiencing hair loss, it’s important to see a hair loss professional. At IHRS, we can help determine the root of your problem and provide hair restoration solutions that are designed specifically to meet the individual and unique needs of each of our clients.

Is Hair Loss More Common in Men than Women?

Does hair loss occur more often in men than women? The answer is no, men and women lose hair at about the same rate, however it’s just more noticeable in men because of the specific balding patterns. Most men suffer from androgenic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness. This makes men lose hair in a larger volume than what women lose hair. When women start losing hair it’s typically a more subtle change. Normally their hair is just thinner all over, whereas men have the obvious bald spots on top of their heads.

Men in their 50’s actually have more hair on the sides and back of their heads than women in their 50’s generally do. Men’s hair also tends grow faster than women’s hair allowing them to obtain fuller thicker hair if they do not experience male patterned baldness.  However, some women and men do have genetic issues that can cause clumps of hair to fall out or even complete baldness to occur.

Men and women also style their hair differently. Women tend to wear their hair in braids or pony tails which can hide balding, while men normally have short buzz cuts which makes balding extremely noticeable.

However, men may lose their hair faster than women due to hormones. It takes a while but testosterone converts to dihydrotestosterone which over time causes males to lose their hair as they get older.  If you’re lucky enough to inherit this gene you may start losing your hair as early as your 20’s.

Losing hair in the shower, when you brush it or even on your pillow at night may not be a big deal. However, it’s when the natural balance of hair growth is out of order that hair loss becomes a problem. This means that no new hair is developing. If this occurs, it may be time to contact a professional.

At IHRS, we can help determine the root of your problem and provide hair restoration solutions that are designed specifically to meet the individual and unique needs of each of our clients.
