Menopause and Hair Loss

Menopause is something all women experience at one point in their life. Some have little to no symptoms, while others experience intense hot flashes, mood swings, and even hair loss. Yes, hair loss. Believe it or not, hair loss is quite common for women before, during and after their menopausal years.

As you may or may not know, menopause is associated with the reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging resulting in lower levels of estrogen, and other hormones, according to the North American Menopause Society.

Throughout this cycle, menopause can cause an increase in androgens (male hormones) and a decrease in estrogen (female hormones) levels in a woman's body. Androgens are in both men and women, as are estrogens. The only difference is the levels at which these hormones reside. What does this have to do with hair loss? Researchers have suggested that the hormones oestrogen and testosterone are very influential in the growth of hair. While female hormone levels drop, the male hormone levels begin to increase disproportionately. Thus, causing the hair that grows to become thinner than before, and can cause facial hair.

Other contributing factors to hair loss during menopause include, genetic predisposition, extremely high levels of stress, or illness. Diagnostic tests such as, thyroid tests, blood sugar level tests, or a rheumatoid evaluation can be used to determine other possible conditions.

Foods That May Help Keep Your Hair Healthy

Eating healthy foods is not only beneficial for your body, mind, heart and overall health, it's also necessary to keep your locks long and strong. Try adding these tasty power foods into your daily diet for extra nutrition for your hair.

1. Oysters:
A lack of zinc in your diet may lead to hair loss. Oysters have an abundance of zinc. Eating oysters can easily reach the necessary amount of zinc you should have per day in small servings. Other foods that you can eat to fill the zinc quota are nuts and eggs.

2. Spinach:
Everyone knows what happens to the cartoon character Popeye when he eats spinach. He gets big and strong and can take on anything. Well, eating spinach may also have positive effects on your hair. Spinach contains nutrients such as Iron and Vitamin C that your hair follicles need to stay healthy. If you don’t like spinach then broccoli is another healthy alternative.

3. Greek Yogurt:
Greek yogurt is another option packed with nutrition that may keep your hair healthy. Greek yogurt contains vitamins B5 and D, which are essential to quality hair follicle health. Other alternatives are cottage cheese and skim milk.

4. Poultry:
Hair is made up of nearly all protein, so what could be better to eat than chicken. Poultry contains zinc, iron, and vitamin B. If you currently have a lack of protein in your diet, adding poultry, such as chicken, can fill that void and may even keep your hair healthy. One alternative is lean beef.

5. Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes may be an excellent option for those in need of more vitamin A. A lack of vitamin A may lead to an itchy scalp and possibly dandruff. Some alternatives to sweet potatoes are apricots, mangoes, carrots, and cantaloupe.

Falling for Change

A new season calls for a new look, right? RIGHT! New is stimulating, adventurous and – dare I say – fierce.  New trends pop-up everywhere around us: new clothes, new shoes, and even hair. It is nice to have spontaneity every once in a while, it keeps life interesting and fun! You can become your alter ego or just have a sense of mystery in your new look by visiting one of the professional stylists at IHRS.

The top five must-try hair colors for this fall season:

  1. Flaxen Blonde
Blondes are going darker! This look hosts dark roots and golden tones spread throughout the hair. This style is perfect for individuals with fair complexion and light features.

  1. Bronde
Beverly Hills colorist and hairstylist, Nelson Chan, says "It's an edgier take on the naturally highlighted look and a perfect way to add a bit of drama to basic brown this fall." Definitely keep the highlights off the top of the head; instead have them scattered around the eyes, cheekbones and neckline.

  1. Copper
A bolder take for redheads, or those who want to be. It’s a step away from the strawberry & orange hues of summer to the red hue of autumn. A more natural look, this style best complements those with blue or green eyes.

  1. Sombré
It’s the subtle ombré – clever name – unlike the popular style, sombré features low lights blended in the under layers and roots of your hair.

  1. Rich Chocolate
This is a rich blend of chocolate and chestnut undertones. The dark hues of this style will work well on many complexions.

If change is what you crave, visit http://Hair4Me.com/ to schedule an appointment with a professional stylist at IHRS!

Hair Loss and Breast Cancer

According to statistics:

·        About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

·        For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

·        Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.

We are fortunate to have many treatment options available for the complexity of the cells in each individual cancer. Be aware that these treatments do have a side-effect: hair loss.

Why does this happen?
Hair loss can occur as the result of chemotherapy which targets rapidly dividing cells – cancer and healthy. Within a few weeks, a patient may lose some if not all their hair. This also includes hair all over the body. The extent to which hair loss ensues depends on which drugs or other treatments (Radiation or Hormonal) that are used, as well as the longevity of it all. Fortunately, this is temporary and may grow back at a later date.

What can be expected?
The loss of hair often occurs one to three weeks after the start of treatment. It can happen rapidly in clumps or gradually. The accumulation of hair can be observed on your pillowcase, in a brush or comb, and even in the shower. This may continue throughout the treatment and up to a few weeks after.

How it be prevented?
It is not a full guarantee that hair loss will not occur. Nevertheless, the best thing to do is plan for the possibility. Trying to maintain a healthy mind and body after hair loss depends on a person's particular situation, such as the support of friends and family, as well as the attitude of the person.

How to make the best of it?
The best way to deal with the situation is to research what you can do to prepare yourself for possible upcoming events. Sources such as www.mayoclinic.org, ww5.komen.org/, and breastcancer.org are great sites that can assist you in the process of treatment.

If you are experiencing hair loss and in need of a solution, visit Hair4Me.com to schedule a FREE hair and scalp evaluation with one of our professional staff to determine the hair restoration treatment that's right for you.

Synergy: Hair Color and Skin Tone

Finding the perfect hair color is not a choice made by luck, but by science. It is never as easy as pointing to a person and saying “I want that!” Just as every person has a different fingerprint, finding the right shade and color is just as unique.

The wrong combination can lead to a total disaster, but the right one can lead to a jackpot full of admiration and envy. The perfect color has the ability to complement your skin tone, personality, and enhance certain facial features.

The way to find the right color has little to do with finding the one you want, and more to do with what color your skin likes.

Hair Color Pigmentation
Hair color comes in two distinct ways: by the level and shade. Color levels fall on a scale of one to ten; one being the darkest color, like jet-black and ten being the lightest color, like platinum blond. Within each level are color pigments- eumelanin (black-brown) and pheomelanin (red-brown), which control the shade.

Skin Undertones, Eye Color and Hair Color
Your skin tone also contains these underlying pigments. Those born with blond hair, have cooler undertones like blue, green, pink or blue-based red. In addition, those born with brown or black hair have warmer, earthy undertones like orange, brown, gold or orange-based red. Your undertone indicates the type of hair color that will look better on you: warm on warm, and cool on cool.

Eye colors also follow the pigment guidelines. Those with eyes that are deep brown, black-brown, gray-blue, dark blue or hazel with white, gray or blue flecks may look better with cooler tones in their hair. However, if your eyes are golden brown, green, turquoise or hazel with gold or brown flecks, warmer tones are recommended.

As complex as this all may seem, the result will surpass the process by far! Read more about skin tone and hair color by visiting http://www.youbeauty.com/hair/hair-color-skintone

Six Common Hair Loss Myths

There are reasons why some of the myths about hair loss have been around a long time. They appear to be true to the eye, are true in the extreme, or have been handed down for who knows how many generations. Below you will discover the follicular truth.

1.    Wearing a hat can cause hair loss.

It is not hats that cause hair loss; it’s the person wearing a hat that can possibly cause hair loss in two ways. First, wearing a hat so tight it constricts blood flow to the hair follicles might cause some shedding.

Second, wearing a hat for an extended time in hot, humid weather can lead to sebum plugs. Heat and  humidity bring sebum, the skin’s built-in lubricant, to the surface. If the sebum has time to react with  cholesterol it forms a plug that can asphyxiate hair follicles.

2.    It is normal to shed more than 100 strands of hair each day.

We each have 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles. At any given time, 85 to 90% of those are in a growth cycle that lasts five years. It is during the sixth year that a hair strand falls out, and the follicle begins another growth cycle.

It was thought that people lost around 700 strands of hair per week, but scientists did the math and that number is considered too high. It’s likely to shed 50-100 strands in one day. Losing more than that could indicate an early stage of hair loss.

3.    Cutting hair makes it grow thicker.

Each strand of hair is thicker at the scalp than at its tip. When you get a haircut, it may  appear that your hair has thickened because the split ends have been cut off. It is a  pleasant optical illusion.

4.    Daily washing and blow drying can trigger hair loss.

This is not true; however, frequent exposure to intense heat does damage hair. Heat  damaged hair is usually brittle and strands easily break off. It may look as if you are  shedding hair. Excessive heat can damage hair follicles as well, possibly causing hair loss.  Very aggressive hair pulling, tight ponytails or braids can cause traction Alopecia.

5.    You have your mother’s side of the family to thank for your hair loss.

If you are genetically wired for hair loss, it is inherited from either side of the family. You  came into the world with two copies of genetic information that determined whether  your hair will go or stay one copy from each parent.

If one of those copies is labeled “hair loss” and the other is labeled “hair for life,” the hair  loss gene will win out because hair loss is the dominant trait. Either your father or  mother could hand you the dominant hair loss gene.

Can Smoking Cause Hair Loss?

Smoking cigarettes has long been associated with many health problems a person can have. While the list of health problems associated with smoking cigarettes is a very long one, here are some of the major health problems caused by smoking: respiratory disease, heart disease and lung cancer.

With that being said, can smoking cigarettes cause hair loss? Smoking cigarettes may speed up the hair loss process. If you have some sort of genetic pattern baldness and smoke, the hair loss that you experience may happen at a faster pace. The toxins from cigarettes may lead to malnutrition of your hair follicles causing them to die quicker and may cause you to lose your hair more quickly. Stopping smoking will not change your hair loss, but may slow down the process.

Smoking by itself cannot cause hair loss, but smoking can also lead to many different types of cancers that may need to be treated by undergoing chemotherapy. Certain forms of chemotherapy treatments may lead to hair loss.

So the answer to the question is no. Smoking cannot directly cause hair loss. However, if you do smoke you should talk to your doctor or a hair care physician at IHRS to better understand the effects of smoking on your health and your hair. Visit Hair4me.com for more information.

If you suffer from hair loss and looking for a solution, join us September 18th for our free seminar!

Childhood Hair Loss

Childhood Alopecia is a very real issue that is misunderstood by many. Statistics indicate that around three percent of all pediatric visits are related to child hair loss. The most common cause of pediatric hair loss is Tinea Capitis, commonly described as ringworm of the scalp. This particular type of fungus primarily attacks hair shafts and follicles. If your child has patches of red, inflamed scalp and short pieces of dry hair, it’s likely that he or she may be suffering from Tinea Capitis. Other types of childhood hair loss include Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, and Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling), as well as hair loss due to trauma.

Between the stress of school, navigating the growing-up process, and fitting in with friends, hair loss is the last thing a child wants to deal with. Thankfully for most children and families, pediatric hair loss will resolve itself. However, for many children hair loss may be a chronic problem. This type of chronic hair loss can be a struggle for both the child and their parents as they search for answers to this problem.

If you've had conversations with your child and still feel stuck, please consider contacting us. IHRS has helped children with hair loss and their parents for many years. IHRS can help you explore the various hair loss and hair replacement options to determine which one will work best for you and your child. All consultations are complimentary, and there is never any pressure to make a purchasing decision. The bottom line is simple: We're here to help.

What’s the Difference Between Male and Female Pattern Baldness?

Among the many biological occurrences that manifest differently for men and women, one that is especially different is cycles of hair loss. Male  Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) is widely known and often discussed, but  just as there are measurable configurations of male baldness, there exist patterns for female hair loss as well. In fact, over 55% of women experience some measure of hair loss throughout their lives.

Just as Hamilton and Norwood developed a scale for male hair loss (developed by Hamilton in the 1950’s then updated by Norwood in the 1970’s), in 1977 Ludwig developed a similar scale for female pattern baldness.

Though there are other scales for both MPHL and Female pattern hair loss (FPHL), these two are the most popular among practitioners and researchers when attempting to classify hair loss.

The Hamilton-Norwood Scale for Men: The Hamilton-Norwood scale has seven types of classifications and several stages within those classifications. For example, within stage 5 there are three levels of progression including 5, 5A, and 5V, which show variations of a receding hairline with hair loss also in the crown of a man’s head. Androgenetic Alopecia, or MPHL, can begin for some men even in their teens and continue on throughout their life. The rate and onset of Androgentic Alopecia is highly individualized. However, it is widely accepted that there are biological determinants for hair loss and the best indicator of a man’s potential for hair loss is in his family history.

The Ludwig Scale for Women: The Ludwig scale has three primary classifications that display thinning hair, diffuse hair loss, as well as frontal hairline recession. Each image in the scale display a woman’s head with her hair parted down the middle. As an example, images I-1 through I-3 show the progression as a woman goes from no hair loss to increasingly thinning hair as indicated by a widening part. Further along in the scale, the hair loss becomes increasingly drastic. As compared to male hair loss, FPHL is not as widely expected or accepted in society. Thus, women affected by Androgentic Alopecia can experience emotional and psychological distress over their condition. This scale helps to normalize their condition and provide a point from which to discuss treatment with professionals in the field of hair restoration, dermatology, and other medical professions.

Causes of Women’s Hair Loss

There are many different reasons why a woman might have hair loss. While some causes of hair loss may be able to be prevented, there are some causes of hair loss that cannot. Here are just a few of the causes of hair loss in women.

Genetics:
The most common form of hair loss known as Androgenetic Alopecia, can be passed down from either your mother or father.

Iron Deficiency:
Women who have a form of iron deficiency due to a poor diet or genetics may lack enough of the red blood cells that are necessary to send oxygen throughout the body including to your hair follicles. This may lead your hair follicles to stop growing hair.
Telogen Effluvium:
Telogen Effluvium mostly occurs after pregnancy. Telogen Effluvium, also known as hair shedding, starts when a woman is pregnant, but with the rise in hormone levels a woman may not immediately notice hair loss. Around 3-4 months after the baby is born, the hormone levels of the mother go back to normal causing large amounts of hair to possibly fall out to get the mother’s hair follicles back on a normal growth cycle. This process may last up to a year.
Too Much Hair Styling:
Using too many hair products or an overexposure to heat and chemicals may cause your hair to become more brittle. Hair dyes that use an abundance of chemicals and hair dryers on a high heat may be the leading culprits as to why you have noticed an increased loss in hair.
Alopecia Areata:
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack hair follicles which may lead to bald spots. The cause of this disease is unknown.

Money Saving Tips for Hair Maintenance

Do your research!
It is very important to do your research on products you are thinking about buying. Every dollar counts so you don’t want to be paying top dollar for low quality products or services. You should look up reviews of products and see what other people think. Peer reviews are a good way for you to get some feedback for products you may be considering purchasing.

Conserve:
When using any of your hair products it is important to conserve the amount of the product you use during one individual use. Even using a little less shampoo per hair wash could save you a good amount of money in the long run. You can also add water to your shampoo to help make it last longer. Using a lot of hairspray isn’t only bad for the environment, it’s bad for your wallet too. Using a little less of everything may also lead to healthier hair and scalp.
Cut your own bangs
No you don’t have to be a professional hair-cutter to cut your own bangs. You can save tons of money by cutting your own bangs rather than going to those expensive hair salons. I’m not saying you should give yourself a complete haircut, but if your bangs need a little trim don’t be afraid to do it yourself. On top of saving money you can save the time it takes to go to the hair salon to sit and wait for someone else to cut your bangs.

Why Going Gray Can Be a Positive

Going gray may save you money.
Think about all those times you went to the salon to get your hair colored because you didn’t want to be seen with gray hair. All the money you could have saved just by going with your natural hair color and creating your own special look. All the money you can save by not continuously coloring your hair could be used towards something more fruitful. You could possibly save up the money you would have spent to color your hair to go on a vacation.
 It’s a powerful look.
Gray hair has always had a sense of power behind it. Just look at some of the celebrities that have gray hair in real life or in movies. Anderson Cooper of CNN proudly shows off his gray hair while working and doing interviews. Anderson Cooper was even offered 1 million dollars to change his hair color, but he never changed it. Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wear’s Prada had gray hair and that may have helped her in her very believable role as a powerful fashion magazine editor.
It may keep your hair healthy.
Stopping yourself from going gray isn’t only costly in terms of money, but may actually be damaging to your hair. Putting certain types of chemicals in your hair may be bad for your hair’s long term health. Constant hair dying may lead your hair to becoming very brittle. This may lead to you having to spend even more money for other hair products.
