Sun Damage: Tips for Summer Hair Care

Summer is in full swing and this Florida heat is no joke. Keeping your hair protected all summer long is just as important as remembering to protect your skin and eyes from the sun. Many times our hair is not a concern when we are thinking about going in the sun, but it is susceptible to sun damage just like our skin. We have some tips to make sure that your hair is healthy.

Cover Up
The easiest way to avoid damage to your hair is to cover it up. There are many options like baseball caps, wide brimmed sun hats, a head scarf, or even a swim cap if you are going to be spending long amounts of time in the water. There are many protective and fashionable options for keeping your hair covered this summer. If you really do not like wearing hats or things on your head then you should ensure that you remember to sunscreen your scalp to prevent a sunburn.

Hydrate
Just like the sun sucks all the moisture out of our skin, it does the same thing to our hair.  It’s important to put the moisture back into your hair after a long day in the sun. If you walk outside into humidity with dry hair, your hair will suck in all the moisture in the air and leave your hair frizzy, so it’s a good idea to drink lots of water or apply a leave in conditioner before going out. On top of shampoo and conditioner, you can use products like a hair oil, hair mask, a product that is especially made for after sun care, or even just a small amount of coconut oil.

Let’s Go Heatless
The sun’s rays are giving you and your hair heat as it is. Using hot hair tools on the regular is not going to make things any better. This summer, challenge yourself (and benefit your hair) to go heatless. There are many alternative options to drying and styling your hair. After the shower try towel or air drying your hair instead of using a blow dryer. You can braid your wet hair, let it dry and then have beachy heatless waves. Or you can embrace your natural hair texture for the summer and give your hair a heat break.

Stop the Damage
Beyond protecting your hair while in the sun you can take some small steps to keep your hair healthier all year round. It is often best to use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush when detangling your hair after the shower. The wide tooth comb is gentler on the hair and is less likely to break the hair than a brush is. You can also keep your ends looking nice by getting a trim every 6-8 weeks, just to ensure that you are split-end free.

If you are looking to have healthy hair, IHRS may have the solution for you. Our office is one of the few to offer the innovative PRP treatment, which uses your own stem cells to help strengthen and regrow your hair, as well as several other hair solutions such as laser hair therapy, Sensigraft, and hair transplants. Lupus and Hair Loss

Beyond dealing with the physical pain from the symptoms of Lupus, many people have to deal with the emotional struggle of hair loss. Hair loss is a common symptom that people with Lupus suffer with; losing more than the 50-100 hairs a day that most people lose. Typically Lupus is classified as an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system mistakes the body’s own tissues as foreign invaders and attacks them. Hair loss associated with Lupus can come from the disease itself or the medication that is prescribed to treat it.

Hair Loss from the Disease
When hair loss is caused by Lupus itself, it is because your immune system is attacking the hair follicles. This can cause the hair to thin or fall out in clumps. Some people can experience hair loss in other places than just their scalp, including hair from their eyelashes, eyebrows and other places on their body can fall out as well. Hair loss can also occur due to skin rashes that are caused by a type of Lupus that affects the skin called Discoid Lupus. Discoid Lupus can cause a thick, scaly, red rash, to appear typically on the scalp, face and ears. This rash is severe because it can scar the hair follicles to the point where they may no longer be able to produce hair anymore.

Hair Loss from Lupus Medications
Many medications used to treat Lupus have been known to cause people to lose their hair. Anti-inflammatory medications like Prednisone and immune system suppressants have been shown to trigger hair loss in some people. Certain medications can cause a certain type of hair loss called “Lupus hair”. This condition causes hair to become very dry and brittle along the edges of the scalp. This type of hair loss is easily treatable. The hair loss will eventually stop when you no longer take the medication.

Losing hair can be a very emotionally taxing experience, but hair loss related to lupus may be treatable especially if it’s caught in the early stages and depending on medications. Hair loss may have you looking for quick solutions, but it’s important to not experiment with over-the-counter hair loss treatments. It could end up making things worse. The non-surgical hair solutions at IHRS may be the answer for you. If you are experiencing any concerning hair loss remember to seek help from a professional who can talk with you about the best treatment options.

If you are considering getting hair restoration, there are many options at IHRS. Some of them include Reallusions hair replacement which is a nonsurgical, noninvasive skin-like membrane that is grafted to your scalp to create a natural hairline with natural hair density. Another option is laser hair therapy that uses low level lasers to deliver light energy directly to the scalp which stimulates the hair follicles to grow. You could even consider our new PRP treatment, which you can learn all about in a previous blog here.

At International Hair Restoration Systems we know how important it is to find the right solution. We take pride in providing our clients with straight answers about all of our latest treatment options and which hair loss solution is right for them. Stem Cell Technology Used to Fight Hair Loss - Now Available in Jacksonville

New Non-surgical Hair Loss Treatment:
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

(photo from ABC)

More than 56 million Americans suffer from thinning hair and hair loss. While hair loss is commonly accepted as something only men experience, over 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. Hair loss can be very emotionally traumatizing but Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy could be the solution that people have been waiting for. IHRS is excited to bring this amazing new treatment to the Jacksonville area. ABC's Good Morning America recently did a segment on PRP therapy talking about the treatment and the experiences that people have had with it. Check out the segment here: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/research-alert-hair-loss-women-38642456

The Science of PRP
What exactly is Platelet Rich Plasma? PRP basically utilizes stem cell technology but without the controversy because it actually uses your own cells from your body. Our blood naturally contains the platelets that are used within the therapy. The platelets contain growth factors that assist in tissue regeneration and healing. These platelets are what help stimulate the inactive hair follicles into the active growth phase.

What Happens During the Treatment?
PRP is a non-surgical treatment that can be done in our office. When you begin the PRP treatment, our first step is to draw your blood. The blood is then put into a machine that separates the platelets from other blood cells so that only the enriched cells or platelets (PRP) remain. The platelets are then injected into the scalp to help stimulate hair growth, decrease hair loss, and make the hair grow thicker.

During the Good Morning America segment, Robin Roberts spoke to people that have gone through the treatment. Shantelle was one of the women featured who had lost her hair after hormonal changes with her pregnancy. She got the PRP treatment and she said her hair is now “very lush and very beautiful,” following the treatment. Michelle Lowe was another woman featured who used the treatment to bring back the thickness to her hair that she once had. After getting her thickness back from just 2 PRP treatments she said “It’s probably the best thing I have ever done for myself.”

Men- do not worry! PRP is also for you. Almost anyone is a candidate for this revolutionary new treatment. PRP can be used alone or with other treatments such as hair transplants or laser therapy. Results of the treatment will vary depending on whether you are using the treatment for hair loss or thinning hair. Depending on the life cycle of the hair follicle, it could take 2 to 6 months before you are able to see full results.

If you are still looking for a solution to your hair loss problems, wait no longer! Our offices are one of the few to offer this innovative PRP treatment. At IHRS, our goal is to help you receive expert care when looking to restore your hair. We place the highest priority on quality and service and are committed to helping you discover that the look and feel that you always wanted is attainable. Stop waiting to restore your hair.
