The loss of a person’s hair happens because the person’s immune system mistakenly attacks their body, or rather, their hair follicles.

Alopecia Areata: Alopecia Areata is a condition that occurs in patches anywhere on the body.

Alopecia Totalis: Alopecia Totalis results in the total of hair on the scalp. This can be at the scalp only. It can be considered an intermediary between Areata and Universalis.

Alopecia Universalis: Alopecia Universalis is the more severe more of Alopecia Areata. This condition is characterized by the complet loss of hair on the scalp AND body. It is also considered to occur in some genetically predisposed people.
