Male pattern baldness is identified by the pattern of hair loss. The typical pattern of male baldness begins at the hairline, and gradually recedes until forming an "M" shape. Eventually the hair becomes finer, shorter, and thinner, creating a u-shaped ring of hair that wraps around the back of the head.
