Reasons for Men’s Hair Loss

Forty percent of men have some sort of visible hair loss by the time they reach 35 years of age and for over 30 years, the International Hair Restoration Systems has been the number one leading hair replacement clinic in the Jacksonville, Florida area. While many men know what it feels like to lose their hair the reasons behind what caused their hair loss can vary.

Male Pattern Baldness
Male Pattern Baldness is the leading cause of hair loss in men and occurs with men who have a genetic sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT begin to shrink, shortening the lifespan of each hair follicle affected, until the follicles stop producing acceptable hair. MPB is generally characterized by a receding hair line and thinning crown. Over time the hair loss progresses to the top of the scalp leaving only a rim or "horseshoe" pattern of hair remaining in the more advanced stages of MPB.

Medications & Treatments
Certain blood thinners, blood pressure medications, and even some antidepressants have been linked to hair loss. An overdose of vitamin A caused by taking too many vitamin A containing supplements or medications can also trigger hair loss. Radiation therapy and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy can cause hair loss by harming the cells that grow hair.

Stress
While not as common as Male Pattern Baldness stress is another factor that has been linked to hair loss. There are three types of hair loss that have been associated with high stress levels telogen effluvium, trichotillomania, and alopecia areata. Hair goes through three phases the growth phase, rest phase, and shedding phase. During high stress events your hair can experience a “shock” causing more hair to go into the shedding phase this type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium.
Trichotillomania is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body often as a way of dealing with uncomfortable feelings such as stress and tension. Alopecia areata is when the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles causing hair loss.
